Get Extremely Creative

I am a big fan of making CapCut edits to inspire how I develop the stories, including the characters, setting, and even cinematography. I love that it allows me to think freely while being creative.

Milanote has been my BESTfriend in this journey of creating Project Universe, and I’m not saying they should sponsor me, but SPONSOR ME! It literally keeps me up at night planning but also executing. It is great for creating vision boards, but it also has templates for you to use if you feel lost.

I highly recommend for all creatives.

Make a sound design playlist

Music is the driving force of any production, in my opinion. I create playlists for shows, characters, settings, and sound design; it helps me create in many ways. Music has the power to make anything and anyone feel something, and when you add that extra layer to concept building, you are also creating a magical moment for others to feel. However, being intentional is the key to great sound design in concept building.

For Nueva, I want the audience to feel every emotion that leads to thought-provoking conversations. The sound design isn’t about playing it safe but making the mind feel safe. Therefore, my playlist is extremely emotional but also full of creativity and jams.

Design your world (Reality, Fantasy, or Afrophoria)

Friend, go all out for your world. There’s nothing like pitching a story and not knowing what your world looks like even if it is rooted in reality. I am a world-building advocate! Designing what the world looks like for Nueva was an act of researching and implementing a little bit of fantasy into Project Universe.

Once again, I love using Milanote for this. I personally break down my world using the REN world-building method, and with Nueva it has a sense of all three philosophies, which makes for such a great psychological thriller.

Since the last time I caught y’all up on the universe, there’s been a lot of development, organizing, and producing that takes a lot of energy but is worth every minute and every energy spent. In today’s STUDIO A - release, I am going to break down where we are in Project Universe from three different perspectives.

1. From a concept producer's POV

As we are building the Realm Empire network, it is important for me to wear different hats and have them as organized as possible. As a recovering perfectionist, I am learning to adapt my skills as a perfectionist into effective creative momentum. This has been working tremendously for me and has created systems that allow all of the creators of the Realm to work effectively.

1. From a concept producer's point of view

Unfortunately, working from a producer's point of view first and foremost is the best way for me to get things done. It allows me to hold myself accountable for the things that need to be done, but also it helps me develop the stories through what we actually need and what we actually have. Now I must say, as a barter-based industry, we have coined a new term for producing called “concept producing.” Concept producing is very similar to producing, but through a barter-based system. This allows us to take the money and the need for money, grants, and pitching to studios and networks who will only want profit to be the drive out of the picture. This is something similar to independent filmmaking but is structured and credible.

We are currently on stage two of development for New Born. This stage as a producer consists of researching locations, reviewing concepts, studying while hosting Script My Story, reading scripts, hosting table reads, and taking inventory.

2. From a creator's point of view

As the creator of project universes, I am constantly bringing the story to life. I’ve recently been making vision boards, writing ideas (brainstorming, scripting, etc), getting inspiration, revamping inspiration, researching, printing visuals, updating my creative library, pitch meetings with concept producer , and attending brainstorming sessions.

On Mondays in Visionaria (a state in REI), our TV/Film Division meets on our development floor to discuss project universe, but we are mainly working on New Born since it’s in development. This series is a really fun series to work on, but it’s an emotionally challenging experience. If you know anything about me and my creative style, you know that I adore building worlds and characters that are philosophically and psychologically impactful enough to move culture forward.

I’ll discuss this world and its characters in the “What’s In Development” section next.

3. From the POV of Head of Tv/Film

I can’t lie, this is one of my favorite POVs because it is rare to see someone like myself not only start but also be the head of their own TV/film network, let alone it being a barter-based system. I used to dream of pitching my shows to networks until my dream shifted into greenlighting my own shows, but also other Southern Black Storytellers who are constantly being left behind by Hollywood. This is a lot of hard work that requires smart decision-making and creative leverage. Having the ability to be in control of my own intellectual property while giving others a chance to own 100% of their intellectual property is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. As Head of TV/film, I am securing what shows will come out first, thinking of a post-production strategy, but also the strategy of pre-production, while thinking of the perfect casting that will represent our audience. Not only that, I am handpicking individuals who thrive in storytelling, representation, and production.
